As we gear up for our newest winter event series, the SheShreds Jamboree, we want to share the stories of some of the incredible women that have helped make an all-female Saturday ski and snowboard event series possible. One of these is Meghan Moran, a snowboard enthusiast and Administrative Support Coordinator at Smith. Read up on what it's like working in the action sports industry, and what Meghan is most looking forward to this winter.
What is your favorite part about working with SMITH?
So many reasons I love working for SMITH! I guess my #1 favorite reason is the people that I get to work with. The environment in the office is always laid back and everyone puts their heart and soul into the SMITH brand. I feel very lucky that I get to work with people that have the same desire for the outdoors as I do.
What got you into snowboarding?
Mom and Dad got me my first snowboard for Christmas when I was 3 years old. They would take me up to Snowbowl in Flagstaff, AZ and hike up the mountain with me on their back. I think that my parents determination to get me to snowboard is the reason why I got into snowboarding. The love of snowboarding came pretty natural once I learned to carve.
What's your best snowboarding memory?
Oh man this is a tough one, I have sooo many good memories riding with friends! One of my best extended memories would have to be ripping it up at Wolf Creek Ski Resort with my best shred gal pal Julia. She was one of the first girls I found who had the same obsession with snowboarding as I did. Her and I pushed each other really hard in 2 seasons of snowboarding at Wolf Creek. Needless to say we are still great friends to this day and try to snowboard with each other as often as we can.
What do you love about the outdoors?
Besides the beauty and fresh air? Definitely the freedom of exploring and getting away from day to day schedule. I’ve found that it’s important for my sanity to remind myself that I am stronger and more powerful than I lead myself to believe when I’m in that hustle and bustle of life. The outdoors for me is the best way to push my limits and remember that I can do anything I set my mind to.
What would you say to other girls who want to get into the action sports industry?
As long as you wear your desire on your sleeve and hustle your butt off, you are bound to find a job in the outdoor industry. When I decided that I wanted to work in the outdoor industry I had a lot of doubt. My worst fear was that it would never work out because I didn’t have much experience. In order to get experience I emailed all of my favorite snowboard companies to see if they needed an intern. That’s when SMITH emailed me back and I finally got my foot in the door. I like to think that I got my official job at SMITH by meeting the right people during my internship and letting them know that I was passionate about the brand. I never thought when I started SMITH customer service 5 years ago that I would be in the position I am in now. SMITH is one of the best parts of my life and although I have worked hard to be where I am, I really think that my desire for the industry carved a path for me.
Best piece of advice you've been given?
You will never make EVERYONE happy. This is actually a piece of advice that I have been given recently. Although it’s pretty simple advice I find it to be very helpful, it’s important to remember that all you can do is your very best and as long as you keep yourself happy that is what is most important.
What is your favorite thing to do when you aren't shredding?
Uhhh daydream about shredding? Well beyond daydreaming, I love to go camping in the mountains and desert with my friends. Maybe get some fly fishing in if I can!
What is something you’ve worked on with SheShreds.co that you’ve enjoyed? What are you most looking forward to?
I will never forget my first ladies night with SheShreds.co at Powder Mountain. So many ladies came out to participate and join in the fun. I could not believe my eyes as I watched the girls converse and encourage each other. Never had I seen such a large group of skiing and snowboarding females going out of their way to make sure that any newcomers (of all abilities) felt welcomed into the crew. It didn’t seem like an event for ladies, but more like a large gathering of friends. Since then I have only watched SheShreds.co grow into an even bigger community. When I heard they were going to be at Zumiez for the holiday season I was so stoked for Gina, Tony, and all of the ambassadors that have kept pursing the brand and making sure that the name SheShreds.co got put on the map! I am so excited to see where this opportunity leads them!!
