This summer, we sponsored a Women's Dirt Bike Weekend event hosted by Canadian ambassador Jenny Graburn, and we were stoked to see the remarkable turnout, and amazing photographs from the event. We asked Jenny to share some stories from the event, so that we can get the word out for Summer 2017!
by Ambassador Jenny Graburn
In 2015 I hosted an all women’s dirt bike weekend outside of Kimberley BC, we had 16 throttle twisting ladies (including myself) attend the event.
This year, the 2nd Annual Kootenay Women on Wheels Dirt Bike weekend brought in 29 ladies. They came from as far as Malakwa, Radium, Creston, Cranbrook, Canmore, Calgary and of course our local crew. Although we came from different places and some were meeting for the first time, everyone got along amazingly and new faces were welcomed to the crew before tires hit the dirt.
My idea for starting this weekend was to encourage the ladies out of their comfort zone, boost confidence, and un-veil their independent capabilities. It’s a unique energy when ladies are heaving their own bikes, wrenching on bikes, and sharing riding tips along with their latest recipe for energy food. It creates new throttle twisting pals, much laughter and a lot of great memories.
Thanks to all of the amazing women who came out to ride, change tires, lead rides, offer riding tips, help load/unload, cheer each other on, cook meals, start fires and keep the laughter rolling. And to those who helped with the pre-event set up; trail maintenance, spreading the word, and helping with sponsorship collection-much appreciated. This year’s event was a huge success thanks to the entire crew! If you missed out, don’t worry! From the ladies mouths to my ears, they “look forward to next year”, confirms that there will be a 3rd Annual Kootenay Women on Wheels dirt bike weekend.
And this is what you can expect at the Kootenay Women on Wheels 3rd Annual dirt bike weekend:
FRIDAY NIGHT: Many show up Friday after work to set up camp and with the summers long hours we squeeze a short-guided ride in.
SATURDAY: Remainder of the ladies show up, sign waivers, meet n’greet, review trail safety and split into groups of riding abilities.
Hit the trails for a guided ride.
Return to camp for prizes, supper, campfire and socializing
SUNDAY: Choose your group and head out for a ride before everyone has to return home.
I would love to see you at next year’s event, whether you’re new to the sport or have been rippin’ for years. We have trails for both and a group for everyone! And if you’re thinking of starting your own ladies group in a sport that you love, DO IT!! Hosting the KWW event last year and this year took a bit of planning and work but it was incredibly rewarding! Surrounded by women laughing, helping each other and having a great time had my heart overflowing. If you want some tips or ideas on what to do and how to accomplish something similar, I’d be more than willing to offer a helping hand.
Keep Adventuring and pushing the boundaries of your abilities!!
