Piper Harris is a SheShreds Ambassador and a great wakeboarder for just entering her teenage years. She is sharing some of her experience with working with Above The Wake Organization which helps autistic and other debilitated individuals to learn to wakeboard. Check out some of her experience and events coming up.
Above the Wake is a non-profit organization. Its vision is to create positive experiences on the water for children with autism and cognitive delays, breaking down stigmas and unleashing potential for greatness through individual teachable moments. I became involved with Above the Wake in April 2015 at Orlando Watersports Complex.
Tom Hart came down from Michigan to have his first Orlando event. I volunteered to help out. I already knew that I enjoyed sharing my love for watersports by coaching younger groms and helping friends. I immediately fell in love with Tom and the children. It was so much fun sharing kneeboarding, wakeboarding and paddleboarding with them.
In August, I was chosen to be a team rider and I didn’t hesitate to say yes. We had our second event at Lake Ivanhoe in September and it was so much fun to add boat riding and tubing to their experiences. I love to extreme tube and thought my new friends would want to go slow, some did and some enjoyed the fast speed. A few didn’t like the tube but a couple of my friends loved and enjoyed the faster speed. We are already planning two events for April 2016.
I am looking forward to continue #ridingforthosewhocant Listed are the 16 cable parks from coast to coast participating in Cable for Cause on April 2, 2016. This will be one of the largest Autism Awareness events in the United States.
