What does SheShredsCo mean to you?
She Shreds is about empowering all women and girls to get involved in action sports. Don't be afraid to try something new, fall and get back up, and push yourself to new limits mentally and physically. She Shreds is a team of kind and supportive girls and women who have your back!
How did you get hooked on your favorite action sport(s)?
I started skiing when I was only a year and a half old and spent a lot of years ski racing. I got into snowboarding at 11 and started coaching in 2008 after I finished university and moved to Whistler. I’ve been surfing for almost 10 years and try to get in the water every chance I get. The best thing about snowboarding and surfing is that it gets you outside, challenges you, takes you to your limits and gives you the opportunity to push through fears and boundaries. You have to take each wave as it comes, you can’t fight the ocean, the ocean always wins.
What challenges do you face being a female in the sport?
Sometimes it can be tough to find girls at your level to ride with, and women feel reluctant to try something new cause they are afraid of making mistakes. As Head Coach of the Showcase Women’s Snowboard Camps in Whistler, I get to share my love of snowboarding with other women, and show them that no matter how often you ride or whatever your goals might be, there is a place for everyone in this sport. You can improve and have fun every day you are on the mountain, you are only held back by the limitations you place on yourself. I like seeing the confidence boost women get through sports. It’s so great to see the impact that has on their riding, and also their attitude and outlook on life.
Where is the most unusual or exciting place you have done your sport?
I’ve gone surfing in Morocco and Peru, caught waves alongside a reef shark in Hawaii, and had a stingray swim right below me in Costa Rica. I’ve snowboarded on countless mountains in Canada and a bunch in the States, but I’d love to check out the legendary pow in Japan soon.
What has been your most memorable moment so far?
Too many amazing Pow days in Whistler to remember them all. Coaching on the Glacier in the summer sun. Coldwater surfing in Tofino, BC when the wind picks up and the waves get rough is always a good test of your nerves. Sunset surf sessions when everything is peaceful and quiet. As a coach, the day that a student overcame her fear of deep powder and told me that I gave her snowboarding back.
Who/what are your inspirations?
I’m lucky to be friends with an amazing group of hardworking female riders in Whistler who are talented, fun and supportive. We are all super busy, but when we get days to ride with the girls there is a special kind of energy that we get from each other. I’m definitely inspired by these girls to keep pushing myself. It’s also great to see snowboarding through the eyes of the people I coach, it reminds me how lucky I am to get to live and work in the mountains, doing what I love every day.
Favorite thing about SheShreds products?
I really appreciate that the She Shreds team is always looking for feedback and suggestions from the Ambassadors about what products we would like to see. They do a great job of putting together pieces that are functional, made with high quality fabrics and also look great. I’m always stoked to wear my She Shreds gear on and off the mountain!
