Your Name (and Nickname): Gabrielle Hockley (Gabby)

Your Age: 26

Your Location (where do you ride mostly): Lumberton BC, Rosen Lake BC

Weapon(s) of choice: 2013 Pro RMK 800, Surf Style surf board, Obrien 3 stage rocker wakeboard, contour action cameras, and photos taken by my husband a professional photographer.

What’s an average day for you like?

Wake up around 9am, energize myself with coffee and head to my home office to do some drafting/interior design work. Work for as long as I feel needed haha and then we head out to the water. We live at Rosen Lake to we have the water right there which is the best thing ever! My husband and I each have a surf set and I have a wakeboard set and then head back to the cabin to do some more work and have dinner!

What is the best and worst thing about being female in your sport?

Figuring out different ways than the boys to maneuver my sled around. Boys seem to just be able to muscle sleds around easier so use ladies have to figure out different techniques to make certain lines.

Besides your ability and style factor as an athlete, how would you describe your personal style?

Comfy, free, surfer girl, flat brim hats, Love open back tanks!

What are your favorite brands/designers for your sports apparel and for stepping out? KLiM, Mons Royale, Battle Axe Dimes, Lululemon, Jetpilot, SheShreds and Wildfox.

Let’s hear your thoughts on how important looking good is to feeling good. “Being” your personal best?

I think this is very important. Looking good always make you feel better and more confident equally riding better!

How dangerous do u really think it is compared to what people do in their regular activities?

Sledding can be pretty dangerous if you aren’t aware of snow pack and avalanche conditions. I feel like surfing is really safe and mellow and that’s why I love it. You never really feel sorry from surfing unlike wakeboarding and snowmobiling always give your muscles an intense work out.

I bet in your experience you have seen some crazy crashes. Describe one.

My husband was caught in avalanche a couple of years ago and that was really scary and intense. Everyone else luckily got out of the way in time. Isaac rode out the avalanche and once he got to the bottom of the gully the snow started building up around him. Luckily it stopped once it got to the top of his handle bars so he only got buried to the waist.

What usually gets people hooked on your activity/sport?

For wakesurfing people love the fact that it’s very challenging but also very user friendly for all ages. It is also great being so close to the boat because it makes it so much easier when teach new riders. Snowmobile is much different though. I think people love sledding because of the adrenaline and excitement you feel when you climb and new shoot or boondock a crazy tree line.

Wakeboarding I love scarecrows and heelside roastbeef 180s. Wakesurfing I love air 180’s and airs nose grabs.

Do you own any other toys?

I also own a 2009 KTM250SXF Dirtbike.

What are three things you could not live without?

Candy, watersports, and snowmobiling.

What are your expectations for this activity/sport?

To have an amazing time and get other girls stoked on the sports!

Who have been your biggest supporters in getting you to where you are now?

My husband and parents. My mom and dad kick butt and snowmobiling!!

Who’s your favorite rider/shooter (photo/video)?

I love Amber Wing she is so fun and down to earth and she sheds at wakeboarding!

What do you do in your spare time when you’re not riding/shooting/competing?

I dirtbike in the spring and fall.

How about in the off season to stay in shape?

I don’t really think I have an off season as I’m sledding in the winter and early spring, and wakesurfing & wakeboarding in late spring, summer, and fall. I guess I also work out but I don’t really consider that fun…. haha

What is your biggest goal to accomplish this/next season?

I would say my biggest goal would be to get 1st on the podium in amateur women’s surf style in the World Series wake surf competition.

What do you do to prep for a competition?

Just ride a ton and plan out a trick line so that I don’t have any repeat tricks in my run.

What competitions and other awards have you won? Include your non sports accomplishments also.

I have one the ladies wakeboard division 3 year in a row at the INT League Ion Washington Wakeboard competition. I placed 2nd in skim style and surf style at the second annual Koocanusa wakesurf competition, I placed 2nd in the intermediate wakeboard division at the INT League Sandpoint competition a few years ago, and one 2 races in the ladies B class in the Alberta Motocross circuit.

What’s your favorite “way” to ride?

Sledding Freeriding and Wakeboarding behind the boat.

Favorite conditions?

Glass Water haha who doesn’t love perfectly smooth water! Snowmobiling deep powder treed area riding.

Where would be your biggest dream place to ride and why?

I love wakeboarding and wakesurfing at Kootenay Lake as that is where I did watersports as a child! I would love to sled more at Revelstoke and I would like to try McCall area.

What song(s) do you listen to while riding that puts you in the zone?

The Eagles “Life in the fast lane” Madchild “Mr.Jackle”, Gemini “Blue”, Bob Marley & The Wailers “Soul Rebel”, Merkules Feat Snak the ripper “L.A.S.H., TechN9Ne “Hood Go Crazy”

What turned you on to your sport?

I have snowmobiled since I was 4 year old so my parents are a huge influence, wakeboarding my brother got into it and taught me how, and wakesurfing my husband as that is what he loved to do when I met him.

Favorite drink of choice to refresh yourself after a long day of riding/shooting?

I love coffee!!! Iced latte’s with coconut milk.

What do you want to be when you grow up?

I would like to be an interior designer that creates full residential house plans. So very similar to what I do know but right now I am doing lots of commercial interior design and residential renovation design.
