Erin Heyman, Coach/Wakeboarder (FL)

by Joanna Brashear on May 26, 2017

Erin Heyman - Wakeboarder & Coach - Florida, USA

 Your Age: 21

Your Location (where do you ride mostly): Florida, McCormicks Cable Park

Weapon(s) of choice: Wakeboard, but I also snowboard, wakeskate, wakesurf.

What’s an average day for you like? As a college student, headed to law school, I go to class in the mornings then head straight to work at the cable, where I am employed as an operator and instructor.

What is the best and worst thing about being female in your sport? There are very few of us female competitive wakeboarders, which is awesome because you get to know everyone. However, it can also be the worst because we don't have divisions. Often pros are competing against amateurs and kids which can we unfair to everyone.

What would you like to see change in your sport to make it better for you and other female athletes? More respect and funding needs to be given to the sport of wakeboarding!

Besides your ability and style factor as an athlete, how would you describe your personal style? Personal style wise I am really laid back, or maybe I’m just a “lazy college kid” who knows..

What are your favorite brands/designers for your sports apparel and for stepping out? I love XTOutfitters which provides me with all my favorite brands such as Body Glove bikinis and Billabong board shorts. For wetsuits, I fell in love with the vibrant high quality designs by GlideSoul.

What usually gets people hooked on your activity/sport? Progression

What is your favorite trick? Currently, my favorite trick to do is a Indy Cab Roll.

What are three things you could not live without? Watersports, bikinis, and chocolate.

Who have been your biggest supporters in getting you to where you are now? My parents of course, my college wake friends, and my McCormicks cable park family.

What do you do in your spare time when you’re not riding/shooting/competing? Due to being a full time college student, working, and being a competitive wakeboarder, spare time isn't really a thing for me. However, when I get to I love visiting my family back home, and rock climbing.

How about in the off season to stay in shape? Theres not really an “off season” in florida for wakeboarding, since the cable is open year round. But I run and hit the gym, when I can’t ride.

What do you do to prep for a competition? Stretch and drink lots of water! I also also try to get a quick warm up set in and complete my run twice. If I can do that, I will feel pretty confident about the competition.

What competitions and other awards have you won? Include your non sports accomplishments also. This year was a great year for me before an injury. During collegiate regionals I got first in open women. Then at Nationals I became the 3rd ranking female collegiate cable rider in the nation! This years points chase, I walked away being the top female rider for my park. However, unfortunately the week before Point Chase Nationals I got injured. I also picked up a couple more sponsors as a Team Rider which was exciting.
As for non sports related, next week I graduate with honors and receive my BA within the top 10% of my class at USF.

What’s your favorite “way” to ride( wake sport- specific, cable, boat, winch)(Snowsport specific- park, freeride/backcountry, urban)? My favorite is definitely cable wakeboarding.

Favorite conditions? BUTTER. 90s no wind, no chop :)

What’s the coolest thing you’ve ever done in your sport? I founded the current 3rd ranked collegiate cable team in the nation, WakeUSF!

What other extreme/action sports are you into? Snowboarding, wakeskate, wakesurf and rock climbing.

If extreme/action sports didn’t exist, what would you be doing with all the free time you’d have? Wow that would be hard. However, before wakeboarding I was a dancer from elementary school till my dance double major in college.

What’s your favorite board/bike/sled to ride and why? I ride a liquid force deluxe, with Melissa bindings and absolutely love it, but I also really like the liquid force peak.

Favorite drink of choice to refresh yourself after a long day of riding/shooting? Always water.
