Emily O'Connor, Snowboarder (MI)

by Allie Huish on May 26, 2017

 Your Age: 20

Your Location (where do you ride mostly): Grand Haven MI at a little sand dune called Mulligans Hollow (Rope Tows for Life!:)

Weapon(s) of choice: Snowboard - preferably one with bindings.

What’s an average day for you like? Wake up... chase my cat around the house/ get chased around my house by my cat. Then I head over to Mulligans Hollow to ride / teach snowboarding lessons.

What would you like to see change in your sport to make it better for you and other female athletes? Being able to get rid of the negative competitiveness. Like the "I'm better then you" idea. Everyone starts somewhere. Encourage those who may not be at the same level you are at to try new things. It's a huge confidence booster when you have your other female riders back on the hill.

Besides your ability and style factor as an athlete, how would you describe your personal style? Oh boy....Fashion wise in the summer makeup blended and eyebrows on fleek. As far as clothing goes laid back but still girly. In the winter I give up. All black, no makeup, tall hoodies. People barely recognize me in the summer if they've meet me in the winter!

What are your favorite brands/designers for your sports apparel and for stepping out? ThirtyTwo, Bataleon, Crab grab, obviously SheShredsCo and Goodwill

Let’s hear your thoughts on how important looking good is to feeling good. “Being” your personal best?I feel that it's not about looks it's about how you feel about yourself. Who cares what others think! You do you!

I bet in your experience you have seen some crazy crashes. Describe one. Ha!!! Ok this question made me laugh a bit because Mulligans Hollow -where I ride- is super small! Seriously look it up on google maps. With that being said there are tons and tons of tiny children who ride and zip by on skis and snowboards. The younger kids are usually so hyped up on sugar from the snack bar they don't really pay attention to where they are going/ snaking (cutting people off). I've seen kids go off jumps/rails/etc and not land so they are are just laying down at the landing and they get hurt because kids will go right after the other and won't look to see if the landings clear. There is honestly a 'crazy' crash everyday.

What usually gets people hooked on your activity/sport? Having something to finally look forward to in the winter! And being able to accomplish a new trick.

What is your favorite trick? Switch 5s and 3s. This one time I got switch 270 to front board on a corrugated back 3 out to my face. Notice I said to my face ....I didn't land it but has still been my favorite trick to watch others do or do myself.

Do you own any other toys?

What gets you pumped up for the day? Music music music! Try it sometime.

What are three things you could not live without? Snowboard, pizza and Ziggy the cat.

What are your expectations for this activity/sport? It would be nice to go pro but I'm still kind of a chicken. For now I'm just enjoying the fact that I'm able to ride. Michigan weather is unpredictable. And physically who knows if I'll be able to still bounce back when I fall in 20 years.

Who have been your biggest supporters in getting you to where you are now? My parents. Thanks Mom and Dad!

Who’s your favorite rider/shooter (photo/video)? Really enjoy watching the too hard crew edits. Great team of girl street riders. Proves that girls can ride just as well as guys can sometimes even better!!

What do you do in your spare time when you’re not riding/shooting/competing? Netflix, paint, eat pizza, hang with friends. Sometimes I do that all at once. It's exhausting.

How about in the off season to stay in shape? Sometimes I manage to get off the couch and longboard on the bike path. Helps a lot with your turns in the winter time. I'd love to start wake boarding but surprisingly in a huge boaters town I don't know of anyone with a boat to do so.

What is your biggest goal to accomplish this/next season? I would really like to start getting better with rails. I can 50/50 and throw 180s off them perfectly but board slides or 180s would definatly be a huge goal for me to accomplish.

What do you do to prep for a competition? Not think about the competition. I get extremely nervous. It's really bad. Someone close to me told me not to think of it as a competition but just a different setup up you might not be able to ride again. Don't think about the tricks you are going to try to throw. Just ride the course like any other given day. Easier said then done but it really helped me this season.

What competitions and other awards have you won? Include your non sports accomplishments also. I just started doing comps last year. Cannonsburg throws a Neff beach bash and I surprised myself and got 3rd for the women's division.

What’s your favorite “way” to ride? Park/ flat ground.

Favorite conditions? Michigan weather has limited me to three kinds of conditions: ice rink, soft ice and dirt/ sand mixed with slush. It's awesome when we get a "pow" day here and there but slushy has got to be my favorite. Feels like you are falling into a pool or Lake Michigan when you wipeout!

Where would be your biggest dream place to ride and why? Any indoor snowpark for year around riding! I've been to Breckinridge once and it was really nice however I don't recommend hiking a feature unless you picked up a can of air from the corner store downtown. Yes, that's a thing.

What song(s) do you listen to while riding that puts you in the zone? Trap music, some older nectar songs, griz, and similar. Or whatever radio station my hill is playing because I forgot my headphones at home.

What turned you on to your sport? To this day I still have no idea! I use to be terrified of snowboarding. I think it was one year when I became friends with some of the guys at my hill and they started challenging me to do new things.

Any new tricks you’re working on? Boardslides/ lip slides on rails. Seriously the scariest thing ever for me right now.

What’s the coolest thing you’ve ever done in your sport? Two years ago I was really into gaps. And one of the features at Cannonsburg, a bigger hill an hour away from me, has this 10 stair gap set up. I was able to do a Switch 180 with a nose grab over it. It wasn't HUGE. But it was the best feeling in the world landing that trick. One of the first big things I've done.

What other extreme/action sports are you into? Extreme fast paced walking. Ok, I'm joking. I'm not even sure if it's a real thing but if it is please let me know!

If extreme/action sports didn’t exist, what would you be doing with all the free time you’d have? Needlepoint.

What’s the trick to riding features and not killing yourself? Say it with me now: Confidence and 100% commitment! Even if you have never tried that trick before you need to fool yourself and say you have. If you hesitate even a little bit you might just bite the dust.

How would you describe your riding style? Laid back on tricks I know how to do. Literally on my back on tricks I'm just learning. If you mean more on what I'm wearing, tall hoodies. Why? Because I hate when I fall and get snow down my pants/back . Tall hoodies usually prevent that from happening.

What would you say is your signature trick? Lip slide on anything and everything except rails. (subj. to change)

Favorite drink of choice to refresh yourself after a long day of riding/shooting? Water.

What do you want to be when you grow up? Ha! I'm never growing up.

Any of your own web pages or social media buttons you want links to? @emisgnar, TATUProductions - YouTube
