by Joanna Brashear on May 26, 2017

Danica Jade - Aggressive Roller Skater - New Mexico, USA

Your Age: 21

Your Location (where do you ride mostly): Roswell, NM

Weapon(s) of choice: Custom rollerskates with wide trucks and grind blocks/sliders and my Canon Camera!

What’s an average day for you like? I hit our local skate park almost every single day. If I'm not able to go out to the park, I skate on my rail at home, in my garage. I also like to go to local trails and street skate spots too!

What is the most difficult part of your activity/sports for a beginner? The easiest? The easiest part of rollerskating is getting down the basics including stance and footwork. The hardest part is getting over mental blocks that stop you from throwing a trick your hardest.

What is the best and worst thing about being female in your sport? The best part about being a female aggressive quad skater, is getting compliments from skate park attendees including skateboarders, bmx'ers and kids on scooters. It's nice to have respect from others who shred!

What would you like to see change in your sport to make it better for you and other female athletes? I just want everyone to continue empowering eachother. I think encouragement is important in this sport as well as others.

Besides your ability and style factor as an athlete, how would you describe your personal style? I appreciate simple things and dark colors.

What are your favorite brands/designers for your sports apparel and for stepping out? I always have on my vans socks and moxi skate boots. My skates also have chicksinbowls trucks and sliders. Sheshreds apparel is the main brand I prefer to wear when I skate.

Let’s hear your thoughts on how important looking good is to feeling good. “Being” your personal best? When I look good, I always feel better. Even if no one sees me. It instantly puts me in a better mood. Especially when I'm skating.

How dangerous do you really think your sport is compared to what people do in their regular activities? I think my sport is mildly dangerous. If you are smart about it and work your way up to trying harder tricks, it's not so dangerous. Protective gear is very important though. Without it there is a lot of risk.

I bet in your experience you have seen some crazy crashes. Describe one. I have seen a few of my friends hit their heads, while skating. That scares me the most. I've seen someone's head bounce off the concrete, with a helmet on of course. But there is still a ton of impact.

What usually gets people hooked on your activity/sport? It's easy to get hooked on ramp rollerskating because it's really easy to progress quickly. It's addicting once you see improvement.

What is your favorite trick? My favorite trick is a "hoho". Which is a handstand on the coping of a transition.

What gets you pumped up for the day? Skating is something that motivates me more than anything. I'm always excited to go land some new tricks.

What are three things you could not live without? I couldn't live without artistic outlets like photography. I also couldn't live without the feeling skating gives me. Especially now that I have felt that feeling.

What are your expectations for this activity/sport? To compete, exceed and have fun.

Who have been your biggest supporters in getting you to where you are now? My number one expectation is to progress. I would like to travel as much as I can with this activity too.

Who’s your favorite rider/shooter (photo/video)? My boyfriend always encourages me as well as my mom and fellow skaters!

What do you do in your spare time when you’re not riding/shooting/competing? I enjoy painting and playing the guitar.

How about in the off season to stay in shape? I like to do yoga.

What is your biggest goal to accomplish this/next season? I would like to learn all my tricks the "switch" way.

What’s your favorite “way” to ride? I enjoy skatepark/ramp skating more than anything.

Favorite conditions? 70 degree weather is perfect, as long as there is no wind.

Where would be your biggest dream place to ride and why? I would love to visit California or Australia to skate. There are many skateparks and street spots both places.

What song(s) do you listen to while riding that puts you in the zone? My favorite band called "Brand New" has many songs I enjoy while skating.

What turned you on to your sport? I saw a video of an outstanding skater called "EstroJen"

Any new tricks you’re working on? I'm currently working on my 360 on a transition.

What’s the coolest thing you’ve ever done in your sport? The coolest thing I have ever done was skate with 2 of my main inspirations. Indy Jamma Jones and Lady Trample.

If extreme/action sports didn’t exist, what would you be doing with all the free time you’d have? I would do a lot more yoga and photography if I didn't have action sports.

p>What would you say is your signature trick? A trick called "tabernacle 270" is one of my signature tricks. I really enjoy it and it looks pretty cool too!

Favorite drink of choice to refresh yourself after a long day of riding/shooting? Sweeted iced tea is my favorite after a long day of skating!

What do you want to be when you "grow up"? I am a cosmetologist now but I would like to get more into photography as a profession.
