Grace Hiljus - Snow/Long/Wakeboarder - Cambridge, MN

 Your Age: 15

Your Location (where do you ride mostly): Wild Mountain in Minnesota

Weapon(s) of choice: My snowboard and longboard.

What’s an average day for you like? On an average day I hang out with my family and friends. I am outside everyday either snowboarding, longboarding, walking, biking, running, jumping on my trampoline, hiking, or even just laying in the sun. I love the outdoors!!

What is the most difficult part of your activity/sports for a beginner? The easiest? I would say the hardest part of snowboarding for a very beginner is probably toe carving or stopping. The easiest is probably heel carving.

What is the best and worst thing about being female in your sport? The best thing about being a female snowboarder is that most people are nice to you and don’t make fun of your snowboarding as much. The worst part is that people expect less of girls and think they can’t do as much tricks.

What would you like to see change in your sport to make it better for you and other female athletes? Having more female snowboarders would definitely help. And more all girl camps and girl divisions in competitions.

Besides your ability and style factor as an athlete, how would you describe your personal style? My personal style is really laid back and outgoing and adventurous. I am down for anything!!

What are your favorite brands/designers for your sports apparel and for stepping out? My favorite brands for snowboarding would be Burton, Ride, Rome, DC, and of course She Shreds Co.!!

Let’s hear your thoughts on how important looking good is to feeling good. “Being” your personal best? I believe that when I look good it makes me feel good which helps my snowboarding style a lot. Also when you look good people notice you more which then leads them to watching your snowboarding.

How dangerous do you really think it is compared to what people do in their regular activities? Snowboarding is really dangerous compared to other people’s regular activities. You never know what's going to happen whether it's a personal thing like your board or someone else hits you or terrain which is very dangerous. Not everyone understand just how dangerous it is. Helmets have saved me quite a few times.

I bet in your experience you have seen some crazy crashes. Describe one. This season a kid was boardsliding a shark fin rail and at the end he fell off and broke his arm, collar bone, and thought he broke his neck although i never found out if he did.

What usually gets people hooked on your activity/sport? When you ride down the hill you feel so free and I think that’s what gets people hooked on snowboarding.

What is your favorite trick? Probably a boardslide.

Do you own any other toys? I own two other snowboards and a longboard.

What gets you pumped up for the day? Listening to music always gets me super ready.

What are three things you could not live without? I couldn’t live without my family, friends, and snowboards.

What are your expectations for this activity/sport? My expectations are to get better every time but having fun is most important for me.

Who have been your biggest supporters in getting you to where you are now? My parents because they drive me and buy all my stuff, my brother because he taught me how to snowboard, and my friend Saylor because she always shreds with me.

Who’s your favorite rider/shooter (photo/video)? My favorite riders are Torstein Horgmo, Red Gerard, Mikey Ciccarelli, and Chloe Kim.

What do you do in your spare time when you’re not riding/shooting/competing? In my spare time I like to hangout with my family and friends, travel, and go on adventures.

How about in the off season to stay in shape? In my off season to stay in shape I run, go to the gym, go on walks, and longboard.

What is your biggest goal to accomplish this/next season? I think learning how to tamedog by next season would be super cool because all my friends are learning how and I really want to..

What do you do to prep for a competition?

What competitions and other awards have you won? Include your non sports accomplishments also.

What’s your favorite “way” to ride? Snowsport specific- park, freeride/backcountry, urban. Snowboarding park is my favorite.

Favorite conditions? A little dust of powder, not to fast but not to slow.

Where would be your biggest dream place to ride and why? My dream place to ride would be Japan because I see it in all the movies and it looks super cool.

What song(s) do you listen to while riding that puts you in the zone? Anything with an upbeat rhythm.

What turned you on to your sport? Seeing my brother snowboard made me really want to try it.

Any new tricks you’re working on? At the moment i’m just working on new features.

What’s the coolest thing you’ve ever done in your sport? One time I was going super fast and didn’t see a jump and accidentally did a tame dog (I didn’t land it and it hurt).

What other extreme/action sports are you into? Longboarding and I love to watch BMX and wakeboarding.

If extreme/action sports didn’t exist, what would you be doing with all the free time you’d have?  I would most likely be traveling even more and hanging out with friends more.

What’s your favorite board/bike/sled to ride and why? My favorite board is my Ride Buckwild because it’s so fun to play around on.

What’s the trick to riding features and not killing yourself? Confidence. If you think you are going to fall, you will. But if you go onto a feature thinking I got this, you have less of a chance of falling.

How would you describe your riding style? I would describe my riding style as fun. I try to have lots of fun and show it in my style.

What would you say is your signature trick? Boardslides is for sure my go to.

Favorite drink of choice to refresh yourself after a long day of riding/shooting? Every time I snowboard I want a Mountain Dew Voltage, although I don’t end up buying them every time because they’re so bad for me.

What do you want to be when you grow up? When I grow up I want to be a pediatric oncology nurse and a snowboarding trainer.
