Courtney Washington - Wakeboarder & Snowboarder - Alabama, USA

Your Age: 24

Your Location (where do you ride mostly): Neely Henry Lake in Gadsden, Al and Lake Martin with Team Russell

Weapon(s) of choice: 138 Hyperlite Maiden with system bindings and Brighton boots.

What’s an average day for you like? An average day for me usually consist of sleep, work, ride and repeat.

What is the best and worst thing about being female in your sport? One of the worse things about being a female in the wakeboarding world is that it is a male dominate sport. Therefore it is hard to find females that do ride, and when you do they are normally in a tight nit group.  The funniest thing is that the worse thing is also the best thing about being a female in the sport. I say this because there is so many girls that do not realize they can wakeboard too and it is not just a men’s sport. The Pro women riders in the wakeboard world are setting the bar high for female riders. They have shown that girls can do anything that the men are doing.

What would you like to see change in your sport to make it better for you and other female athletes? I would really like to see women riders get credit for all the things they have accomplished in the past few years. For an example I would really love to see women back on the Pro Wakeboard tour. I feel like taking women out of the pro- tour has discouraged many young female riders from pursuing their dreams to be a pro wakeboarder.

Besides your ability and style factor as an athlete, how would you describe your personal style?  I love flat bills, high tops and tank tops!

What are your favorite brands/designers for your sports apparel and for stepping out? Some of my favorite brands for wakeboarding are Hyperlite and Byerly, Shred Ready, Oakleys, Hurley, Nixon, Vans, Young and reckless, and Of course I love rocking apparel. Some of my favorite snowboard gear consist of Burton, Grenade, Volcom.

What usually gets people hooked on your activity/sport? For me nothing beats the rush of learning a new trick no matter how big or small. It’s the best feeling in the world and that instantly keeps me hooked. Another big thing that keeps me hooked on the sport is the fellow riders. Everyone is always excited to see other riders progress.

What is your favorite trick? Some of my favorite wakeboarding tricks to watch are Stalefish glides, Pete Rose, Toe side nuclear back rolls, KGB 5.

What are three things you could not live without?
1) The first thing I could not live without is my family and friends. They definitely make life more fun!
2) Music
3) of course my wakeboard

What are your expectations for this activity/sport? To love what I do and enjoy every second I’m on the water.

Who have been your biggest supporters in getting you to where you are now? I would have to say that the people I ride with everyday have a huge part on where I am today. They are the one who have inspired and motivated me. They have always had a lot of faith in me and my ability even when I had no idea the level of ridding I was capable of.

Who’s your favorite rider/shooter (photo/video)? Dallas Friday.

What do you do in your spare time when you’re not riding/shooting/competing? I help teach a competitive gymnastics team in my home town.

How about in the off season to stay in shape?  In the off season I try to stay in shape by snowboarding, mountain biking, and try to still ride cable while it’s cold.

What is your biggest goal to accomplish this/next season? One of my biggest goals for this season is to start learning consistent spins and to not be so mental about my riding.

What do you do to prep for a competition? I try to ride mostly every day, and just have fun trying new things even when I’m trying to lock in my competition run.

What’s your favorite “way” to ride( wake sport- specific, cable, boat, winch)(Snowsport specific- park, freeride/backcountry, urban)? Wake- I would have to say boat. I like cable but nothing beats ridding behind the boat.

What song(s) do you listen to while riding that puts you in the zone? I hate to say it, but I still jam out to Nelly Radio on Pandora.

If extreme/action sports didn’t exist, what would you be doing with all the free time you’d have? I can’t imagine a world without action sports!

What’s your favorite board/bike/sled to ride and why? My favorite board to ride is the Hyperlite Maiden. This board has a snappy pop, quick edges, and a light swing weight! Plus the graphics are on point.

Favorite drink of choice to refresh yourself after a long day of riding/shooting?  I love my Blueberry Red Bull!
