Your Age: 23
Your Location (where do you ride mostly): Whistler/Winnipeg
Weapon(s) of choice: Loving my Salomon Gypsy snowboard, along with 32 boots (TM-2's) they're on the stiffer side of boots which I like and paired with the Mirage bindings which have a squishy heel cup giving it the perfect balance!
I enjoy skateboarding too, and get some sweet shots on my Death Lens which is fisheye lens case for your phone. Its perfect if you don't want to carry all your GoPro equipment around with you!
What is the most difficult part of your activity/sports for a beginner? The easiest? The most difficult part when you're first starting off and don't have anyone to help you, is the overwhelming choices and technology of equipment out there right now. My advice in terms of snowboarding is to 'splurge' on boots, if you have crappy boots then your day sucks.
The easiest part is hurting yourself... just kidding! Having fun is the easiest, no matter what level you're at there's always little challenges and once you overcome them its the best feeling ever!
What is the best and worst thing about being female in your sport? The worst thing is when you're juust starting out and have to put yourself out there while still falling all over the place and not exactly sure what you're doing, but embrace it! Ask people for help, be confident, make friends, push yourself! A lot of girls get 'scared' or nervous when its just a whole bunch of guys in the park but you realize they're all just stoked you're trying! Another not so great thing is not getting taken seriously sometimes, because you 'probably don't know much being a girl'....just ignore those people.
The absolute best thing is the connection between all the girls out there! Because there's so few of us, seeing and meeting other like-minded females, there's an automatic connection, and there's so much support and encouragement! We have such a bond at SheShreds and everyone is always pushing each other to try new things, showcasing their radness in all different ways, and connecting over our bond of being badass, fearless females of all ages!
What would you like to see change in your sport to make it better for you and other female athletes? Definitely having more events and competitions out there would be awesome. I think females have come a long way in terms of being recognized as athletes though.
Besides your ability and style factor as an athlete, how would you describe your personal style? Badass.
What are your favorite brands/designers for your sports apparel and for stepping out? Ive always stuck with 32 for snowboard boots, they're an awesome company and make super comfy, durable boots. For goggles, SPY. I have the 'happy lens' they make which lets in more blue rays and makes you happy. When I first heard about it I was pretty skeptical, but honestly they're so awesome and I always recommend them, they just feel easy on your eyes and never fog up.
Let’s hear your thoughts on how important looking good is to feeling good. “Being” your personal best? If you think you look awesome, you will BE awesome. Having that confidence makes you focus on your tricks 'cause you already know you look good.
How dangerous do you really think it is compared to what people do in their regular activities? I don't know what you consider 'regular' activities, but it can depend.
If you're dropping massive cliffs on your snowboard compared to running on a treadmill, then yeah probably a little more dangerous.
What usually gets people hooked on your activity/sport? The excitement and lifestyle.
What gets you pumped up for the day? Music and coffee, lots of it.
What are three things you could not live without? Coffee, ketchup, and my cat.
Who have been your biggest supporters in getting you to where you are now? My parents, always supporting me 100% with whatever I want to do.
Who’s your favorite rider/shooter (photo/video)? Aimee Fuller
How about in the off season to stay in shape? I love going to the gym and skateboarding!
What do you do to prep for a competition? Practice, practice, practice, and lots of sleep to give you as much energy as you need, and then Monster for the morning of!
What competitions and other awards have you won? Include your non sports accomplishments also. I won 1st place in a Skate Like A Girl amateur competition that they put on I when they came to my hometown. I plan to start entering some snowboard competitions this season and I’m super stoked!
Where would be your biggest dream place to ride and why? Japan. Have you seen the POOOOOWW!
What song(s) do you listen to while riding that puts you in the zone? A lot of Flume.
What turned you on to your sport? Half my childhood I grew up in Wales, UK, but was born in Canada and spent half the time here too. Oddly enough, I actually learnt to snowboard in Wales on ‘fake snow’, which is like carpet of bristles on the ground – its like riding on ice the entire time. Just like skateboarding, I followed in my brother’s footsteps when he started taking lessons at the hill. Once I moved back to Canada I bought my first snowboard set up, from Sport Chek or something like that.
Skateboarding has always been my brother’s thing, and he would always support me and teach me new stuff, which got me hooked on skating.
I’ve been hooked on snowboarding since I made the move to do “just one season” in Whistler after my first year at Uni, didn’t know anyone, and had never lived alone before…4 seasons later and I’m still going back for more!
What’s the coolest thing you’ve ever done in your sport? End of the season last year I tried the ‘pond skim’, which is basically bombing it down the mountain and trying to skim across a 70ft pond..I made it half, got absolutely soaked, but it was soo fun!
If extreme/action sports didn’t exist, what would you be doing with all the free time you’d have? Probably looking after 27 cats.
What’s your favorite board/bike/sled to ride and why? Salomon Gypsy, its so poppy and fun!
What’s the trick to riding features and not killing yourself? If you’re going to fall, just roll with it. Trying to avoid it, or stop yourself usually lands you in a worse position.
Favorite drink of choice to refresh yourself after a long day of riding/shooting? Monster.
What do you want to be when you grow up? I’ll never grow up.
