by Allie Huish on May 26, 2017

 Your Age: 25

Your Location (where do you ride mostly): Atlanta, GA or the Blue Ridge Mountains

Weapon(s) of choice: Longboard, a Backpack & coffee, Adobe Creative Cloud

What’s an average day for you like? Wake up at 5 and find coffee asap. M-F I head to work and design/create/innovate in the medical animation field. After work I'll either be running, skating, or spoiling my dog. As soon as Friday hits I jet off to the mountains or to a city I haven't visited yet. Once I explore it I come back and add a pin to the city on this big map I have in my bedroom. I'm addicted to travel and am fortunate enough to date a guy who is just as addicted!

What is the most difficult part of your activity/sports for a beginner? The easiest? The gear expense and learning how to stop on a longboard. The easiest is making friends out on the trails or in the parks.

What is the best and worst thing about being female in your sport? Backpacking - Worst: going potty outdoors in the winter. Best: meeting other BA females on the trails. I really love the camaraderie that comes along with being a female in both backpacking and longboarding too. Females tend to stick together in adventure sports and encourage each other to get out and be bold.

What would you like to see change in your sport to make it better for you and other female athletes? I think there is a lot of pressure for girls to feel like they have to be perfect as soon as they start the sport. Which we all know isn't possible. My hope, is for girls to be able to explore any interest they have no matter how bad they are at first. You aren't going to feel comfortable on your board the first few times. You probably WILL get lost on a trail at some point. Just take it all with a grain of salt 'cause once you find your groove you'll find you're addicted to the adventure of it all.

Besides your ability and style factor as an athlete, how would you describe your personal style? A mixture of city slicka and mountain bohemian. (AKA whatever is a good deal at TJ Maxx).

What are your favorite brands/designers for your sports apparel and for stepping out? SheShreds, TJ Maxx, Columbia, Nike, REI

Let’s hear your thoughts on how important looking good is to feeling good. “Being” your personal best? The important thing is being you. Whatever that looks like. Love yourself and you'll realize others will be attracted/befriend you for YOU.

How dangerous do you really think it is compared to what people do in their regular activities? There is certainly a better chance you'll still have skin on your knees and you may never have to see a bear in person, but what fun is that compared to seeing nothing but mountains for miles or the satisfaction of landing a trick you've been working on for weeks?

I bet in your experience you have seen some crazy crashes. Describe one. I had just gotten my best friend in college hooked on longboarding. We went out to bomb a long route that was pretty curvy. Halfway into it, with a 90 degree curve coming up, she goes flying by me, straight down the hill. She started getting speed wobbles and decided to bail right on what she thought was a driveway. Unfortunately it was a gravel driveway. Immediately she got thrown off the board and slid 20 feet across the gravel. She was wearing a helmet and therefore lives to tell the tale.

What usually gets people hooked on your activity/sport? The views! Backpacking is user friendly and you can start small and work your way into longer and more intense trips. Longboarding is always a satisfying challenge. Wind whipped hair while flying down a hill feeling like you're dancing while you carve just can't be beat.

Do you own any other toys? I mess around with a Canon but just to document memories, Steve is the one with photography skills. I like to play guitar whenever I get free time.

What gets you pumped up for the day? Planning. I don't know why but I really love planning my next adventure/schedule/gear purchase etc. I like doing all the research and organizing the logistics. I get pumped when I discover new places to explore on Instagram.

What are three things you could not live without? Coffee, Mountain Views, Live Music

What are your expectations for this activity/sport? To encourage other girls/women to give it a try. I think women my age assume they're already too old for board sports and I hate that.

Who have been your biggest supporters in getting you to where you are now? My family is athletic and supportive, they are definitely my biggest cheerleaders. My boyfriend is a photographer, always catching great action shots for me, and never turns down the opportunity for adventure. I have a lot of diverse friends due to my diverse interests and they have all helped shape and strengthen me in some way.

What do you do in your spare time when you’re not riding/shooting/competing? I binge watch Netflix with my catahoula dog, Monroe.

How about in the off season to stay in shape? Anything that is adventurous and fun like Tough Mudders or rock climbing. I recently got into CrossFit and I love it. Backpacking is pretty much a year round thing for me though.

What is your biggest goal to accomplish this/next season? I am spending a good amount of time in Colorado this winter and I'm hoping to perfect my powder board skills.

What’s your favorite “way” to ride? Backcountry roads for miles.

Favorite conditions? Fresh asphalt. My neighborhood just got repaved and I've been in heaven. For backpacking I love Spring. No bugs yet and cool nights with a fire and good conversation.

What song(s) do you listen to while riding that puts you in the zone? I'm on a Ben Howard and The Ballroom Thieves kick right now. I listen to an infinite amount of music genres. Feel free to find me on Spotify @brindlelee

What turned you on to your sport? Tie between backpacking to see Havasu Falls in the desert and hiking in the rockies to do some backcountry snowboarding this past winter.

What’s the coolest thing you’ve ever done in your sport? I got to backpack ABOVE the clouds this past New Year's Eve.

What other extreme/action sports are you into? Wakeboarding, surfing, snowboarding... ok just board sports in general.

What’s your favorite board/bike/sled to ride and why? Loaded Tan Tien - it's the perfect combination of flex and length. There's a lot of room for tricks and creativity.

What would you say is your signature trick? Smiling. Seriously. It may not be a trick but it's rare to catch me not smiling.

Favorite drink of choice to refresh yourself after a long day of riding/shooting? Coffee but also... am I allowed to say a good craft beer?

What do you want to be when you grow up? I love what I do, being a graphic designer. However my dream is to freelance jobs while I travel the states in a camper for at least a year. I'm hoping that will happen before I'm 30. There is just so much I have yet to explore it drives me crazy some days like an itch you can't reach.
