Amelia Taylor - Mountain Biker/DH Rider - UK

Your Age: 36

Your Location (where do you ride mostly): North and East UK

Weapon(s) of choice: Enduro bike, DH bike

What’s an average day for you like? I'm a mum and I work but on riding days I'm up early, van packed and off to the forests or mountains. Ride all day, home, eat, sleep, repeat!

What is the most difficult part of your activity/sports for a beginner? The easiest? Difficult is mind over matter, believe you can do it and you probably can! Easiest, finding your flow on well built trails.

What is the best and worst thing about being female in your sport? The best is the great support from guys and companies. They are keen to help girls out. The hardest is the sexism in the media. Personally I'm not that offended, I shrug it off but plenty of girls are and that's not cool!

What would you like to see change in your sport to make it better for you and other female athletes? Just more girls out on bikes riding and racing. It's work in part that we need to do ourselves.

Besides your ability and style factor as an athlete, how would you describe your personal style? I'm busy so my lifestyle dictates my personal style. Stuff which lasts and is hard wearing!

What are your favorite brands/designers for your sports apparel and for stepping out? I love sheshreds of course, especially shirts and hoodies with leggings or skinny jeans. I love the new riding gear from @ride981 who also support me, their stuff is rad. Designed by riders for riders. For stepping out, I love Cath Kidston's print dresses. I can be a girly girl occasionally.

Let’s hear your thoughts on how important looking good is to feeling good. “Being” your personal best? I look my best when I feel my best. Life is hectic. I might have no make up and a mum bun but if I'm in my flow, I'm smiling and I'm at my best.

I bet in your experience you have seen some crazy crashes. Describe one. Pretty dangerous. I've got lots of friends who have had injuries. I've done ok so far! It will come though, I'm sure! Reminds me to sort insurance!

What usually gets people hooked on your activity/sport? The flow and adrenaline. It lets you leave your worries behind. Like mindfulness. Plus the company, the scenery, the fitness, the accomplishing your own goals. So much!

What is your favorite trick? I'm not tricky! I'm working on bigger drops and jumps all the time.

Do you own any other toys?? Bikes! DH, Enduro and cx bikes.

What gets you pumped up for the day? Sunshine! And a packed van ready to go and do shared up,fits with my partner and friends.

What are three things you could not live without? My family My bike My van

What are your expectations for this activity/sport? Just to keep upping my game and beating my own goals. I want to get better at steep corners.

Who have been your biggest supporters in getting you to where you are now? When I first started riding, Terry Kirkup and Ian Anderson at Newcastle Mountain Bike Club. They made riding accessible to me, they were welcoming and gave me tips. Now it's my partner, Carl and all the female shredders out there!

Who’s your favorite rider/shooter (photo/video)? Got to be Rachel Atherton and Danny Hart. Danny owns my local bike park, @dannyhartsdescendhamsterley. @jwdtphotography shoots all our races and does an epic job!

What do you do in your spare time when you’re not riding/shooting/competing? I mum and I'm a psychologist, I love my job, I have great balance.

How about in the off season to stay in shape? It's the UK, we ride, whatever the weather! You just plan for the worst!

What is your biggest goal to accomplish this/next season? Just to ride steeper quicker!

What do you do to prep for a competition? Eat and sleep good. Think positive and visualise myself getting a clean run.

What competitions and other awards have you won?

What’s your favorite “way” to ride? Smooth and flowy. I like natural tracks rather than big machine built stuff. I like to be in the trees.

Favorite conditions? Sun, dust, rare here! I suppose riding in the rain is good training!

Where would be your biggest dream place to ride and why? Whistler, just looks epic! I've skied there way before I could ride.

What song(s) do you listen to while riding that puts you in the zone? If you made me pick then the Ramones, Sheena is a Punk Rocker and the Naked and Famous, Young Blood.

What turned you on to your sport? I was at a hard time in life going through a marriage break up. I needed something for me. I visited my brother the other end of the country and he took me out for a ride. I was hooked, got home, googled my local club. Biking changed my life. Gave me new strength and a new community. It made me more resilient.

Any new tricks you’re working on? Not really! Bigger drops and jumps!

What’s the coolest thing you’ve ever done in your sport? We won the female pairs in an awesome street race in Bourg St Maurice. Amazing atmosphere getting cheered by everyone in the bars, lots of fun! I've ridden in the Alps and Andorra too, all amazing!

What other extreme/action sports are you into? I can ski, not well!

If extreme/action sports didn’t exist, what would you be doing with all the free time you’d have? Errrrr I have no idea! Baking?

What’s your favorite board/bike/sled to ride and why? I love my Ibis Mojo HD but I need to move on to bigger wheels. It's just time! I've been given some great demo bikes recently!

What’s the trick to riding features and not killing yourself? Mind over matter, heels down, speed.

How would you describe your riding style? I'm determined but I like to look new features over first then go back and try! I like flow and I like feeling on the edge, that, wow, I just stayed on thing.

What would you say is your signature trick? I'm not tricky.

Favorite drink of choice to refresh yourself after a long day of riding/shooting? Tea please! Love tea!

What do you want to be when you "grow up"? I'm a psychologist. That is my dream job. I work with children, families and teachers. I love what I do. I apply psychology to riding a lot. Check out my blog!
